Women's and Men's Fashion
Women's Fashion
In the early days of the area, when settlers were first coming here, most made their own clothes. These clothes were simple in style, as well as practical. Most of the clothes were made with coarse cotton, flax (linen), wool, and homemade materials. Fancy material and dresses brought with them from their previous home were put away for special occasions.
As the Midland area began to be settled rapidly after the coming of the railroad in July of 1879, women brought with them the latest fashions. Many of the top European fashion styles were worn on the streets of Midland with variation according to the conditions of the area. These variations included bustle dresses with shorter trains, since there were only dirt roads which would soil the hems of dresses.
In the 1880's the women's fashion craze was for bustle dresses. These dresses had full back skirt, flat front skirt and long neck design. In the mid 1880's the average weight of a winter dress with all its undergarments could be as much as ten to eleven pounds.
In the late 19th and early 20th century women's fashions became a bit more practical in design. Full length skirts had become more plain in design while blouses added interest and colour through intricate lace designs. Day to day skirts and dresses began to be raised off the ground further, as well as become more practical to women's ever increasing participation in outdoor activities. At the turn of the century, evening wear began to reflect the S-shape design that was becoming popular in Europe. The S-shape was accomplished through a new design in women's undergarments. However this design did not last long.
In the 1910's dress designs were again simpler and similar to the designs of the 1890's. The 1920's saw women's fashion change to a more boyish look with short hair and flat chests. The waist of these dresses dropped and the cut was looser and straighter. The 1930's brought back a more feminine look in dresses. These dresses were still loose and simple in design compared to the dresses 20 years earlier, however, they were designed more to the shape of a woman's body.
The wedding dress came into fashion in the 19th century, before that the bride and groom would wear whatever was fashionable at the time. These clothes would become their "Sunday Best". Wedding dresses at the turn of the century were mostly of simple design with good quality material. Some of the more influential women had wedding dresses that were a bit more ornate. Some women topped their veils with orange blossoms which were a symbol of chastity and fertility. These dresses along with the accessories were then carefully stored away for a daughter's wedding.
In 1890 a woman's bathing suit covered most of her body and was mostly in dark colours. When light coloured suits got wet they became too see through. As time went on the bathing suits became shorter and generally smaller. The first bikini arrived on the beach in 1946.
Men's Fashion
The basic three piece suit that we are familiar with today, was worn by men in one form or another for the last 200 hundred years. The le ngth of the jacket or pants may have changed over time, or the material it was made from. The dark navy blue, grey, and black suits have been in fashion since at least 1860.
The men's evening suit in the 1910's included a tail coat, a top hat and a cane. In the 1920's a man's suit had a more sporty look. The pants were knee length, the jackets shorter, and the outfit had a matching cap. The bow-tie was all the rage in the 192 0's.
No outfit was complete without a hat, whether the man was going to work or church. Indoors it was proper etiquette for men to remove their hats.
